This qualification is designed to meet the needs of educators within the early childhood education and care sector. It reflects the role of educators in early childhood education and care who work in regulated children’s education and care services in Australia. They support children’s wellbeing, and development in the context of an approved learning framework. Educators use a range of well-developed skills and knowledge using discretion and judgment when carrying out their work in the context of established policies and procedures. They may work independently or under the guidance of others, though in some contexts that guidance may not be on-site.

To achieve this qualification, 160 hours of work-placement must be completed in a regulated children’s education and care services.

Important Information

  • Note that the sequence of unit delivery may vary. A timetable with your allocated units for each term will be provided at the beginning of the term.
  • To successfully complete the qualification, a total of 17 units must be completed, including 15 Core and 2 Elective units as listed above.
  • Course requirements: Completion of 160 hours of Work Placement in a regulated Children’s Education and Care Services.
  • (WP) next to a unit indicates that the unit has a work placement component.

Students who complete this course may wish to continue their education with the CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care, and or CHC52021 Diploma of Community Services followed by the CHC62015 Advanced Diploma of Community Sector Management, or they may choose the BSB50420 Diploma of Leadership and Management followed by BSB60420 Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management.

A Course credit is the recognition of prior learning, study, or work experience that allows students to receive credit towards a qualification. It can reduce the course duration and cost required to complete a course by exempting students from certain units if they have already met the learning outcomes. This process is outlined on the Sydney Metro College website under the download section in the Student Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy.

Sydney Metro College has the following entry requirements:

International students must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age and have completed Year 12 or equivalent.
  • Participate in a course entry interview to determine suitability for the course and student needs.
  • Have an IELTS* score of 5.5 (test results must be no more than 2 years old). English language competence can also be demonstrated through documented evidence of any of the following:
    • Educated for 5 years in an English-speaking country; or
    • Completed at least 6 months of a Certificate IV level course in an Australian RTO; or
    • Successful completion of an English Placement Test

*Note that other English language tests such as PTE and TOEFL can be accepted.  Students are required to provide their results so that it can be confirmed they are equivalent to IELTS 5.5.

The qualification is delivered over 52 weeks, consisting of 4 terms – 3 terms of 10 weeks each and 1 term of 14 weeks, plus up to 8 weeks of term breaks (2 weeks per term), including public holidays.

This program is delivered face-to-face and is classroom-based. All units are delivered and assessed using a combination of the following instructor–led methods; face-to-face in the classroom, in a simulated environment and blended online accessing learning and assessment via the E- learning platform. A mandatory 160 hours of work placement in a regulated children’s education and care services must be completed.
