This qualification is designed to meet the needs of workers in the community and/or residential setting who follow an individualised plan to provide person-centred support to people who may require support due to ageing, disability or some other reason. It reflects the role of workers involves using discretion and judgement in relation to individual support as well as taking responsibility for own outputs. Workers have a range of factual, technical and procedural knowledge, as well as some theoretical knowledge of the concepts and practices required to provide person-centred support.
To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 120 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the units of competency.

A Course credit is the recognition of prior learning, study, or work experience that allows students to receive credit towards a qualification. It can reduce the course duration and cost required to complete a course by exempting students from certain units if they have already met the learning outcomes. This process is outlined on the Sydney Metro College website under the download section in the Student Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy.

The qualification is delivered over 52 weeks, consisting of 4 terms – 3 terms of 10 weeks each and 1 term of 14 weeks, plus up to 8 weeks of term breaks (2 weeks per term), including public holidays.
This program is delivered face-to-face and is classroom-based. All units are delivered and assessed using a combination of the following instructor–led methods; face-to-face in the classroom, in a simulated environment and blended online accessing learning and assessment via the E- learning platform. A mandatory 120 hours working within an Approved Service Centre.
