This qualification is designed to meet the needs of educators within the early childhood education and care sector. It reflects the role of educators in early childhood education and care who work in regulated children’s education and care services in Australia. They are responsible for designing and implementing curriculum that meets the requirements of an approved learning framework and for maintaining compliance in other areas of service operations. They use specialised knowledge and analyse and apply theoretical concepts to diverse work situations.

They may have responsibility for the supervision of volunteers or other educators.

To achieve this qualification, 280 hours of work-placement in a regulated children’s education and care services must be completed.

Important Information

  • Note that the sequence of unit delivery may vary. A timetable with your allocated units for each term will be provided at the beginning of the term.
  • To successfully complete the qualification, a total of 15 units must be completed, including 12 Core units and 3 Elective units as listed above.
  • Course requirements: Completion of 280 hours of Work Placement in a regulated Children’s Education and Care Service.
  • (WP) next to a unit indicates that the unit has a work placement component.

Pathway to DECEC Graduates can continue their studies to gain higher qualifications, such as:

  • Bachelor of Early Childhood Education or Teaching

o             Provides a pathway to becoming a fully qualified Early Childhood Teacher (ECT).

o             Common university degrees include:

             Bachelor of Early Childhood Education

             Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood & Primary)

  • Specialised Short Courses or Certifications

o             Certificate IV in Education Support – for those interested in becoming a teacher’s aide.

o             Diploma in Montessori Education – for careers in Montessori schools.

o             Certifications in Special Needs or Inclusive Education – to specialise in working with children with disabilities.

A Course credit is the recognition of prior learning, study, or work experience that allows students to receive credit towards a qualification. It can reduce the course duration and cost required to complete a course by exempting students from certain units if they have already met the learning outcomes. This process is outlined on the Sydney Metro College website under the download section in the Student Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy.

The Training Package requires that students must have completed the following:

Completion of CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care Or
Completion of superseded version CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care has been completed by those seeking to enrol.

 

Sydney Metro College has the following entry requirements:

International students must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age and have completed Year 12 or equivalent.
  • Participate in a course entry interview to determine suitability for the course and student needs.
  • Have an IELTS* score of 5.5 (test results must be no more than 2 years old). English language competence can also be demonstrated through documented evidence of any of the following:
    • Educated for 5 years in an English-speaking country; or
    • Completed at least 6 months of a Certificate IV level course in an Australian RTO; or
    • Successful completion of an English Placement Test

*Note that other English language tests such as PTE and TOEFL can be accepted.  Students are required to provide their results so that it can be confirmed they are equivalent to IELTS 5.5.

The qualification is delivered over 52 weeks, consisting of 4 terms – 3 terms of 10 weeks each and 1 term of 14 weeks, plus up to 8 weeks of term breaks (2 weeks per term), including public holidays.

This program is delivered face-to-face and is classroom-based. All units are delivered and assessed using a combination of the following instructor–led methods; face-to-face in the classroom, in a simulated environment and blended online accessing learning and assessment via the E- learning platform. A mandatory 280 hours of work placement in a regulated children’s education and care services must be completed.
